Smart Meter InstallBy Jonathan Spencer Jones, Copenhagen, Denmark

The European Smart Metering Alliance (ESMA) has been launched to advance and support the development of smart metering in Europe.

Comprising companies and organisations interested in smart metering, the ESMA is intended to bring together all stakeholders to achieve consensus on smart metering, to promote innovation in smart metering, and to maximise the energy savings to be derived from smart metering.

Monitoring, reviewing and disseminating

Project deliverables include a website, best practice guidelines on the implementation of smart metering, monitoring and review of the energy savings that can be delivered by smart metering, annual reports on the progress and benefits arising from the introduction of smart metering and the provision of case studies and articles for the media.

The ESMA, which was launched at Metering, Billing/CRM Europe, is being coordinated by the British Electrotechnical and Allied Manufacturers Association (BEAMA Limited) with partial fianancial support of €620,000 (subject to final negotiation) from the European Union’s Intelligent Energy Executive Agency (IEEA) through its SAVE funding programme.

Stakeholder strategy

At the launch BEAMA Energy director, Howard Porter, said that a detailed strategy is to be developed and the Spanish utility, Endesa, will bring together the utility stakeholders and BEAMA the providers for this purpose.

Porter also commented that the alliance would have a nominal duration of three years but is expected to continue beyond that time.
