Global smart grid solutions provider Elster this week entered into contract with Dutch power distribution system operator Enexis.Under the agreement, the Honeywell owned smart grid solutions provider will provide the utility with more than 1m smart electricity meters.
Signing of the five year deal falls under utility’s efforts to contribute towards Netherland’s reaching European Union’s energy efficiency goals.
In a press statement, Honeywell said Elster was selected by Enexis due to its success in implementing utility’s previous AMI project which saw installation of some 900,000 smart gas meters in 2015.
[quote]Previously, in 2008, the company had supplied the utility with a complete meter data collection and meter data management platform for smart metering.
Ben Vermeulen, managing director of Elster Solutions in Netherlands commented: "The implementation and development of our LTE smart electricity meters is helping to future-proof the grid management capabilities in the Netherlands."
Jan-Willem Janse, director of smart metering at Enexis added: “… The technology is more cost-effective compared to the current generation of meters and will help Enexis to minimise rates for their customers in the future.”
To date, Enexis has deployed over 1.3m smart meters in Netherlands.

In early February, Enexis also signed French smart solutions provider, Sagemcom for the provision of smart electric meters.
In a press statement, Sagemcom said it will develop and supply its ESMR5.0 smart electric meters in line with the country’s DSMR4.2 specifications, requesting adaption with the Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication model.
The ESRM5.O meters will be deployed by the utility in Q4 2016 through to 2021.Under the contract, Sagemcom will participle in the Fair meter concept, which will help Enexis to contribute to sustainability in the energy sector.
At a later stage, Sagemcom and Enexis said they will develop the ESRM5.0 smart meters for LTE Machine-Type Communications (LTE-MTC), which enhances radio coverage for low data rate applications while still providing all the performance, economic, and longevity advantages of LTE.
Rutger van der Leeuw, Customer and Market director of Enexis said: "With the ESMR5.0 project and by selecting LTE as our communication technology of choice, Enexis further enhances the long term availability and quality of its smart grid...”
