ELTEL will work with Kamstrup to install a portion of DONG Energy's one million smart meters deployment

In Northern Europe, infrastructure network developer ELTEL has this week joined a consortium to assist DONG Energy and Kamstrup deploy smart meters in Denmark.

According to a company statement, the EUR20 million deal means ELTEL is now one of two firms to partner with metering manufacturer Kamstrup to deploy part of one million smart electricity meters in Copenhagen and its surrounding areas.

The project is reportedly the largest smart meter rollout in Denmark so far.

DONG Energy's rollout will start with a pilot project in 2016 until Q1 2017 and will finish by the end of 2019.

The selection of ELTEL follows an announcement by Kamstrup during Q1 of 2015 of the signing of a contract with DONG Energy for the provision of communication devices at grid substations and smart meters in private households.

Juha Luusua, president of Eltel Power Distribution, said: "The project execution will be based on Eltel’s extensive experience from previous projects in Denmark and other Nordic countries."

The news follows, Østkraft, the electrical utility for the regional municipality of Bornholm in Denmark, in Q3 2015 issuing a tender for a turnkey remotely read metering solution.

The energy supplier is seeking a complete delivery, installation, implementation and service of approximately 26,000 electronic remotely read electricity meters.

The smart meter rollout contract stipulates that the supplier must dispose of existing electric meters after deployment in line with Danish energy regulation, reported Metering & Smart Energy International.

The sole supplier must also deliver a complete IT system for data collection and data transfer to the common data hub, including complete commissioning and data exchange between energinet.dk, the owner and operator of Denmark's electricity and gas transmission networks, and internal settlement at Østkraft.

The data acquisition system must be able to receive energy data from 2,000 buildings fitted with Landis+Gyr remotely read electricity meters, and use this data in its own single operating system.

Requirements for meters are based on standards set by the industry and Østkraft, both national and international, including EU requirements.

The smart meter rollout is expected to be take approximately three years.
