Coventry, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- May 13, 2011 - E.ON U.K. has committed itself to the installation of one million smart meters by the end of March 2014, helping to put customers in control of their energy.
 
The announcement was made as the company’s new Smart Metering Center of Excellence in Nottingham, which provides a dedicated contact point for customers with smart meters, was opened by the country’s minister of state for the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Charles Hendry.

“Now that we have a firm idea of the government's intentions for smart metering, we've developed our plans to ensure we are ready and able for the rollout of 8 million smart meters by 2019,” said Graham Bartlett, managing director of E.ON's Energy Solutions business. “Meeting the needs and addressing any potential concerns of our customers is crucial if the smart meter revolution is to be a success.”

The dedicated Smart Metering Center of Excellence, based at Wyvern House in Nottingham, will be home to a specialist smart meter customer service team of around 100 offering tailored advice and support for customers with smart meters.
 
All front line customer service representatives at the Smart Metering Centre of Excellence will have a smart meter installed in their own homes as part of the early rollout. This will ensure that the team is able to share experiences with customers as well as knowledge about the equipment.

To date E.ON has installed 35,000 smart meters as part of a series of trials, and intends to install a further 100,000 in 2011 and a total of 1 million smart meters during the Foundation Period, which is the timeframe up to Q2 2014, when companies are able to test, trial and learn before the mass rollout begins.
