Staines, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- July 24, 2013 - British Gas has reported installing its millionth smart meter as part of Britain’s nationwide rollout which will see all current gas and electricity meters replaced by 2020.

In addition the company has 1,700 experts trained to deliver the rollout, and says it has interviewed more than 26,000 customers to ensure the rollout meets customer expectations.

“The millionth smart meter installation represents a major milestone for our customers and for Britain on the road to a smarter energy future,” said Stuart Rolland, managing director of British Gas Smart Metering. “At British Gas we want our customers to be the most informed and empowered in the country, so we’re working hard to ensure customers see the benefits of smart meters as early as possible.”

With the smart meters customers also receive a smart energy monitor show the cost of their consumption in pounds and pence. In addition British Gas customers receive Smart Energy Reports, with personalized energy efficiency advice and information on how much they spend on cooking, heating and using appliances.

A 2012 report from British Gas and Oxford Economics found that based on savings of 5%, smart metering could lead to an annual saving of £65 per year on average household energy bills.

In other news British Gas, together with the government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles and electric vehicle charging solution provider Chargemaster, are offering a limited time free electric vehicle charging package including a home charge point and access to the nationwide POLAR network of 1,800 public charging points.
