Ericsson deloys smart meter Estonia
Austria's Salzburg Netz selects Ericsson as provider of IT solutions for the deployment of smart meters through to 2019

In central Europe, Austrian utility Salzburg Netz has selected global M2M company Ericsson as the primary lead firm to provide back end IT solutions for the utility’s AMI project in the city and federal state of Salzburg.

According to a company statement, the solution including meter data management, alarm handling, workforce management, a user-friendly consumer portal interface and comprehensive end-to-end testing, will operate some 470,000 smart meters planned to be deployed by the utility through to 2019.

The deal is expected to benefit 95% of Salzburg Netz’s consumers and Ericsson has already started deployment and integration of its solution in the utility’s IT environment.

The development will allow the transformation of Salzburg's power supply to include a significantly higher share of renewable energy usage, production and distribution while reducing CO2 emissions, Metering & Smart Energy International has learnt.

Salzburg Netz, a 100%-owned subsidiary of Salzburg AG, is a power, water and infrastructure utility company serving the city and federal state of Salzburg.

In other smart meter news in Austria, Telekom Austria Group M2M secured a tender with energy supplier Netz Burgenland Strom in early October.

Metering & Smart Energy International reported that Telekom Austria will use its 4G/LTE solution, launched in the Q1 of 2015, to roll out mobile-based smart meters from the south to the north of Netz Burgenland Strom's service area.

The smart meter Österreich Zähler embedded with a smart grid communication module supporting both the LTE/4G (2600MHz and 800MHz) and GPRS/2G (1800MHz and 900MHz) technology will be deployed to Netz Burgenland Strom's domestic consumers.

Commenting on the development, Peter Sinowatz, managing director of Netz Burgenland Strom, said “The use of existing mobile networks in combination with power-line data transmission allows for the rapid and cost-efficient implementation of our smart meter project."
