Amsterdam, The Netherlands --- (METERING.COM) --- June 12, 2009 - The city of Amsterdam is to install 45 charging stations for electric vehicles as part of a two-year public demonstration project, becoming one of the first cities in Europe to install such a network.

The ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations from California-based Coulomb Technologies will be managed by the company’s international partner, 365-Energy. Renewable energy for the charging stations will be provided by national energy company Nuon.

The city plans to deploy 200 charging stations before 2012, and the charging stations are expected to fuel 10,000 electric cars in 2015.

“We are proud to announce our first European deployment of the ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations,” said Richard Lowenthal, CEO of Coulomb Technologies. “The city of Amsterdam will have the largest network of smart charging stations in Europe for fleet and consumer charging.”

Drivers of electrical vehicles subscribe to the ChargePoint Network through a website and receive a ChargePoint smart card that allows them to charge their car at any charging station. To use a charging station, the driver holds the smart card near the card reader on the station's front panel. Once authorized, the station door will unlock, allowing the driver to plug in his vehicle, and will energize the outlet once the door is safely locked securing the driver’s cord. The service is free of charge for this pilot project.

Available charging stations are mapped on Google™ maps. As the network of ChargePoint charging stations expands across Europe, drivers will have access to the service in any city, regardless of their provider – similar to the roaming capabilities provided by mobile phone providers.

The charging stations provide fleet managers with an online Fleet Portal displaying performance data and graphs for their plug-in fleet, including greenhouse gas savings and gasoline savings. The charging stations also notify drivers and fleet managers via text message when individual vehicles are overdue for charging, when charging abnormally terminates, and when charging is complete.

In addition to this project in Amsterdam, 365-Energy has announced that it is to deploy ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations at the Katholieke High School of Limburg (KHLim) in Belgium, as part of the country’s first European Clean Mobility Center.

The charging stations will be used for electrical vehicles, which are owned by iNet, the research institute of KHLim. As part of the project, KHLim will acquire several electrical vehicles, such as bikes, scooters, motorbikes and cars, which will be rented to the general public at the University campus. The objective of the Clean Mobility Center is to create awareness with municipalities and corporations by demonstrating the solution and offering expertise.

KHLim’s CO2 neutral area produces its own green energy through wind, heat and solar. KHLim also has its own energy grid to which the ChargePoint charging stations are connected.
