Auckland, New Zealand and Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- May 9, 2007 – Metrix, a division of Mighty River Power Limited, is to deploy a 5,000 meter trial of Elster’s EnergyAxis® System in Auckland, New Zealand.

The aim of the trial, which will involve Mercury Energy customers in the eastern suburbs of Auckland, is to test the system’s two-way meter-to-meter communication capabilities and to evaluate how smart metering technology will enable Metrix to add value to the services it delivers to retail electric providers and to energy consumers.

The installation is under way and is expected to be completed by the end of July.

Commenting that the project “will undoubtedly have a major influence on the future of smart metering in New Zealand,” Ian Howell, business solutions manager, Metrix, said: “Our experience with the EnergyAxis system has been very positive so far and we look forward to sharing the benefits of this state-of-the-art technology with our customers.”

The EnergyAxis System utilizes a 900 MHz controlled mesh network with Elster's residential electronic REX® meters and A3 ALPHA® meter collectors. Metrix selected Elster's EnergyAxis System after evaluating various technologies globally and visiting several EnergyAxis System deployments in North America.

Metrix is the metering business of energy generation, trading and retailing business Mighty River Power and provides meters and meter reading services to residential and commercial customers across Auckland and to other electricity retailers. Mercury Energy is Mighty River Power’s electricity and gas retail business.
