The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission has released a report about the new ACT power meters to be installed initially in new suburbs in Canberra, with all households being offered to choice to adopt the new technology. The meters record electricity consumption by time intervals, and provide an alternative to the current flat billing rate.

The regulatory body says the new meters will allow households to be better informed about their power use, and offer them the opportunity to choose when to turn on appliances that use significant amounts of power. Utilities will be able to offer variable rates in peak and off-peak hours, and can supply a device that is installed in kitchens and that shows the current price of electricity.
