The Wi-SUN Alliance has announced its support of added wireless frequency bands in Southeast Asia, which will improve data rates, performance, robustness and security for smart grid, smart city and IoT deployments across the region.

The Wi-SUN Alliance is a global organisation consisting of an ecosystem of companies seeking the the advancement of connectivity for the Internet of Things.

Improved connectivity for ‘smart’ deployments

According to a press statement, the Alliance stated that with the need for smart grid, smart city and IoT deployments across Southeast Asia grows, the additional frequency bands will “allow for improved data rates, performance, robustness and security.”

The new frequency bands added are 920-925 MHz in Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam; 919-923 MHz in Malaysia; 918-920 MHz in the Philippines and 917-923 in Korea.

The Alliance adds that with Wi-SUN support for the additional connectivity bands, countries in Southeast Asia have access to proven Wi-SUN profiles for Field Area Networking (FAN) and Home Area Networking (HAN).

Phil Beecher, chairman of the Wi-SUN Alliance said: “Wi-SUN is responding to the announced market demand for Smart Grid and Smart City deployments in Asia.

“The Wi-SUN FAN profile, using currently available frequency bands, provides a foundation for enhanced Utility, Smart City and other IoT implementations in the region, as already proven by millions of devices deployed globally.”

Wi-SUN spec for AMI

In January this year, the Wi-SUN Alliance has unveiled a new specification for wifi connectivity in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), distribution automation and smart cities that can be applied in most regions of the world.

The specification allows smart utility networks to talk to enterprises, service providers and municipalities by enabling interoperable, multi-service and secure IPv6 communications over an IEEE 802.15.4g-based wireless mesh network.

Regions supported by this specification, now and in the near future, include North America, Japan, Brazil, Australia, Asia Pacific, India, Europe, the Middle East and South Africa.
