India Flag 2Delhi, India --- (METERING.COM) --- December 7, 2006 – The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) is considering a proposal by the government’s power department to introduce time-of-day (TOD) metering for residential customers. TOD is already offered in some states for commercial and industrial power users.

If the proposal is approved, the pilot study will be implemented by the Energy Research Institute. Customers on the program will receive an electronic meter fitted with a pre-programmed chip that records demand, time and energy usage. If they are prepared to change their behavior to use more power during off-peak hours, they will be able to save on their electric bills.

The cost of the electronic meters and the resources needed to install them could prove to be stumbling blocks to widespread deployment, but there is recognition that TOD could be expanded outside the project area if results are successful.
