In India, the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) has been recognised for its energy efficiency programmes. The power distribution company secured an award from the Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI). According to a local media, the utility will receive IPPAI's Innovation award during the 18th Regulators and Policymakers Retreat to be held in Karnataka on the 28 October.

The Regulators and Policymakers Retreat is an annual conference which brings together policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders to address challenges hindering the Indian energy and power sector from reaching its full potential.

TSSPDCL is being recognised for helping its consumers to improve their energy efficiency through adopting innovative technologies and business models.

The energy provider integrated its grid with decentralised solar systems and equipped its consumers with LED bulbs to reduce demand on the main grid. The solar programme led to the addition of 2,059MW of solar energy on the main grid.

Through the UJALA scheme, some 260,000 LED bulbs have been issued to consumers of the power distribution company. These developments will help the utility to reduce reliance on fossil-fueled energy generation, reduce carbon footprint, line up with environmental regulations and improve customer services by providing consumers with affordable and clean energy.

Moreover, some 51,686 ageing transformers were replaced with modern models resulting in a reduction in distribution losses by approximately 1.5%. The award also recognises efforts by the energy company to ensure consumers are accurately billed by equipping them with smart electric meters.
