EDMI teams with On-Ramp Wireless for Asia-Pacific rolloutsSingapore-based metering manufacturer EDMI has formed a partnership with wireless communications supplier On-Ramp Wireless.

Under the agreement, EDMI has integrated On-Ramp's random phase multiple access (RPMA) network technology into smart grid solutions for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) applications.

The pair have already offered the combined solution on a number of EDMI's smart electric meter rollouts in the Asia-Pacific region, the companies confirmed in a statement.

The two companies are now seeking to apply the RPMA technology to water meter projects to open up opportunities in new markets.

On-Ramp Wireless, based in California, sees the partnership as a chance to expand its offering and is "integral to increasing our reach in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Kevin Hell, president and chief executive officer, at On-Ramp Wireless.

On-Ramp’s RPMA network is designed for low-power, wide-area, machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, which leverages the globally license-free 2.4 GHz IEC band to reach assets in urban, rural or underground environments.

Technology alliances for better smart metering

The alliance with On-Ramp is one of several made by EDMI with technology providers within smart grid and smart metering.

In September 2014, Singapore power line communications company GridComm has entered into an agreement with the manufacturer to collaborate on narrowband PLC modules.

Under the deal, GridComm will make GC-Net, a networking software that performs self-adaptive and auto-network routing configurations for noise-prone power line environments, available to EDMI’s PLC smart meters – such as DIN Rail MK30 and MK31E split meters.

While in August 2014, the company teamed with smart grid company Silver Spring Networks to offer smart city and smart energy solutions in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Southeast Asia following the pair’s successful first phase of deployment with the Singapore Power Group.
