Colombo, Sri Lanka --- (METERING.COM) --- January 18, 2011 - Sri Lanka’s power and energy ministry plans to introduce a smart metering system, with prepayment in selected areas, according to local press reports.

Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was quoted as saying that plans are in hand to introduce a powerline communication system, with a locally produced electronic meter. The meters would be introduced first by Lanka Electricity Company’s (LECO) in its area of supply and later to other areas.

The meters are being produced by Ante Leco Metering, a local company established by LECO and Ante Meter Company of China.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Electricity Board would introduce a prepayment system, with the aim to help customers to save energy through controlled usage. Users would be able to obtain credit via mobile telephone and would be disconnected automatically when their credit runs out.
