gas meters

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) announced its intent to meet a target of 22,000 smart meter installations by the end of 2017.The utility’s smart meter rollout falls under efforts to modernise its gas distribution system to improve its operations in Rawalpindi.

Since 2016, the energy provider has managed to install some 18,000 smart meters out of the 38,000 units required for to complete the project in Rawalpindi city.

The smart gas meters will enable SNGPL to improve its billing accuracy and help consumers to improve their gas efficiency and costs as well as reduce leaks.

With the new gas meters, SNGPL will be able to detect meter tampering and reduce its expenses associated with theft.

Apart from the installation of the two-way communication gas metering system, SNGPL is laying a 450km gas pipeline to improve gas distribution to serve the growing customer base in Rawalpindi.

Since the launch of the programme, the energy provider says it has witnessed a huge decrease in both technical and non-technical gas distribution losses.

Line losses have lowered from 9% in 2015 to 7.5% in 2016 and consumer enquiries regarding over-billing, load shedding and gas leakages reduced from 48,000 to 28,500 in 2016.

Smart gas meter installations

In the third quarter of 2016, Indiana-based energy holding company Vectren published its 15-month plan to install automated meter reading (AMR) devices in its service territories in Ohio state.

Under its rollout plan, Vectren said it plans to install encoder receiver transmitters (ERTs) on its gas meters in west and central Ohio.

The utility company will install new ERTs for smart meters currently using old ERT models in Fort Loramie, Jackson Center, Minster, New Bremen, Sidney, Bellefontaine, Huntsville, Lakeview, Russells Point and West Liberty. [Illinois utility to install smart meters for gas and electric customers].

The ERTs help the company reduce operational costs associated with door to door meter readings. The system uses radio signals to transmit accurate gas consumption data to Vectren staff driving by gas meters with installed ERTs.
