In India, the Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited will soon start installing prepaid electricity meters to improve its energy billing process.The state-owned electricity generating company announced the purchase of 1 million prepaid meters which will be installed for residential consumers over a period of two years.
Use of the prepaid metering system will help consumers to improve their energy efficiency. Moreover, the utility says it will recover debts owed by consumers. Customers will use electricity in line with their budgets.
Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited said it will start installing 200,000 prepaid gas meters for customers in Dhaka as from February 2018.
The smart gas meters purchased by the gas company are integrated with an earthquake resistance technology and touch sensors. The meters are waterproofed and dust resistant.
“With the installation of hi-tech meters imported from Japan, consumers will enjoy improved customer service and uninterrupted gas supply with a reduction of gas leakage,” said an official with TGTDCL.
“(And) if there is no system loss, consumers will have to pay less.”
The prepaid meters installation initiative is being funded by the utility in partnership with the Bangladesh government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. [Bangladesh receives Japanese funding to deploy prepaid gas meters].
Under the initiative, Titas Gas has installed 7,500 prepaid gas meters and an additional 16,500 are expected to be installed by February 2018.
Prepaid meters and grid modernisation
The project will help modernise Titas Gas' grid and billing systems as well as help the gas company reduce energy theft.
In early August, the Iranian Oil Pipeline and Telecommunications Company began deploying a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor its gas pipelines.
The company invested $3 million towards the installation of the SCADA software and related infrastructure including sensors to improve management of the national gas distribution network. The installation process will last for two years.
The new SCADA system will provide the Iranian Oil and Telecommunications Company with real-time data on the flow and pressure of the gas being distributed in its pipelines to reduce non-revenue expenses incurred due to leaking gas pipes, especially in remote areas.
The programme will help reduce operational expenses used in the manual inspection of the gas distribution network.
the Iranian Oil Pipeline and Telecommunications Company has plans to develop 6,000 kilometres of gas pipelines to increase the country’s total gas pipelines to 40,000km.
