Liberalised gas market for Singapore

Singapore’s natural gas market will be fully liberalised early next year. The process should have been completed in 2001, but delays in the liberalisation of the power industry in the country – the major natural gas end-user – have led to delays in the gas industry liberalisation process.

Singapore is separating its gas transport, import, trading and retail operations to create a competitive market. The conversion from town gas to natural gas will occur about a year after liberalisation, and will take four to five years to complete, but once the process is over a fall of 15-20% in retail prices is anticipated.
