skill development

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) launched a training centre for the smart cities industry. The NSDC is a division which operates under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The launched training centre, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK), is a 30,000 square feet facility, under the management of Orion Edutech and will provide smart city skills to some 4,000 youths per annum.

Outside equipping ordinary citizens with skills on smart cities, the training academy will equip NDMC’s workers with knowledge on innovative technologies to help various council departments to optimise their operations.

The NDMC’s Smart City Limited and the NSDC have developed a curriculum, which the smart cities training institution will follow in training municipal workers and unemployed youths to address the shortage of skilled workforce in the country’s smart cities industry.

The centre will also work in partnership with the Ministry of Urban Affairs and Housing.

The launch of the facility falls under efforts by the Indian government to ensure sustainable technologies are adopted across all sectors in the Indian economy. The move is expected to help India to achieve its goal of becoming one of the world’s top three super powers by 2030 through an increase in the development of smart cities.

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, commented: “ Collaboration is the need of the hour to support inclusive and sustainable development in the country. Today's event signifies integration and convergence approach towards Respected Prime Ministers, two most ambitious projects the Skill India Mission and the Smart City Mission. Skilled workforce is required for effective development of any big or small project. We aim for recognition and respect to this workforce through skill training."
