The Indian state government of Andhra Pradesh announced that it is drafting and will implement a policy to enhance the adoption of energy efficiency technologies.The drafting of the energy efficiency policy is in line with recommendations set by the World Bank advising the state to introduce a policy to enhance its energy conservation.
Energy efficiency policy stipulations
The regulation will make energy efficiency mandatory and a fundamental measure of Andhra Pradesh's grid system.
The rule will force consumers to use energy efficient equipment certified in line with standards set by the state government.
The energy efficiency policy will also force the state government and utilities to provide consumers with incentives for reducing their energy usage and costs using energy efficiency rated equipment.

The news follows the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh being ranked the leading energy efficient state in India by the World Bank.
The state is reported to have saved 1,5 million energy units since 2015.
Energy efficiency adoption
In mid-October, India added energy efficiency to its smart cities programmes.
The country's Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) signed a deal with the Ministry of Urban Development to enhance energy conservation and ensure grid reliability.
Under the agreement, EESL and the Ministry of Urban Development will supply and deploy the latest energy efficiency technologies at municipal level in cities selected to benefit from the country’s Smart Cities Mission.
The Smart Cities Mission is an initiative designed by the Indian government under prime minister Narendra Modi, to deploy smart city technologies to modernise the infrastructure of 100 cities to ensure qualify of life in India.
The two parties will focus on helping water utilities and public lighting operators reduce their energy usage and costs to optimise their operations.
For water utilities, the energy efficiency programmes will ensure replacement of existing water pumps and sewage systems with energy efficient models. [India announces $149.9m energy efficiency budget].
EESL will provide maintenance services in addition to arranging and providing funding for installation of energy efficiency technologies and equipment.
