DEWA cuts transmission losses thanks to smart metersIn the Middle East, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has claimed that its transmission and distribution losses are down due to the installation of smart meters in late 2014.

DEWA said the utility had linked 120,000 meters to the network two months ago and losses are down to 3.5%, "one of the best percentages worldwide, compared with 6 or 7% in the US", said Saeed Al Tayer, chief executive of DEWA.

Mr Al Tayer, speaking on UAE Smart Cities Outlook at a government summit this week, said the motivation to install the advanced metering technology was because: “We need to link to modern systems and household appliances to reduce our losses in electricity transmission and distribution networks as it will preserve our environment and reduce carbon dioxide emissions."

Widescale smart meter rollout

DEWA announced this week that more residents would soon have access to water and electricity smart metering.

The utility is also aiming to reduce the time of interrupted water supply to customers from four minutes to two.

Al Tayer said: “The four-minute mark was an improvement on last year and a 16-minute improvement compared to the world average,” he said.

“We have performance indicators, that are some of the best worldwide. Energy is the main pillar for any economy – if you don’t have a high and efficient power, electricity and energy sector, you cannot advance. So we are focusing on reducing from that number.”

By 2030, Dewa aims to reduce energy consumption by 30%.

Upgrades to power infrastructure

In February 2014, the authority opened a new complex with transmission and distribution control centers and started work on a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for Dubai’s main water network.

The new control centers form part of the new AED500 million (US$136 million) Warsan Complex, which covers 650,159 square feet and includes an administrative building for up to 2,350 employees.

One of the control centers is for power generation and transmission on the 132/400 kV networks. The second center monitors and manages the networks to maintain continual improvement.
