Meter manufacturer Conlog has recently signed a US$1.5 million contract in West Africa for the supply of three-phase split meters, circuit breakers and the company’s POWERcard scratch-card-based vending solution. This is the first deployment of the POWERcard solution in West Africa, where the growing GSM network makes it effective for the purchase of prepaid electricity.

POWERcard enables consumers to purchase electricity by buying a scratch-card from a local retailer and redeeming the face value through online mechanisms such as IVR, the Internet, and in the case of West Africa a GSM text message. The system integrates into any existing Standard Transfer Specification (STS) based system, including competitor products.
