This week, global technology research company Technavio released a new report listing the world's leading Zigbee wireless technology smart device manufacturers.Leading vendors in the global ZigBee devices market announced by the report include Amtel, Digi International, Freescale Semiconductor, GreenPeak Technologies, NXP Semiconductors, Renesas Electronics, Silicon Labs, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments.
The study also lists 18 other prominent smart devices vendors expected will gain market share over the forecast period.
The report 'Global ZigBee Enabled Devices Market 2016-2020' also provides a forecast of the ZigBee market, based on deployments of smart devices implementing ZigBee wireless technology, according to the company.
It analyses devices including connected light bulbs, remote controls, smart meters, smart thermostats, and set-top-box.
Sunil Singh, Technavio’s senior market research analyst for consumer electronics, said ZigBee has a lower energy consumption rate than bluetooth and wi-fi and a longer communication range.
Singh added: “ZigBee and ZigBee Pro require only 1/10.000th of the energy that is typically needed to run a wi-fi network...”
Consumers and service providers are thus opting for alternate wireless technologies such as ZigBee to improve energy efficiency, he said.
Zigbee deployments for smart devices
[quote] The release of the study follows announcement by Netherlands-based fabless semiconductor company GreenPeak Technologies that by September 2015 it had delivered 100m ZigBee chips to the smart home market.
Cees Links, CEO and founder of GreenPeak Technologies, commented: “Currently, most homes have about 10 wireless devices connected by WiFi.
“However, within a few years, we expect over 100 ZigBee or other IEEE 802.15.4 based connected devices in each home. This includes sensors, appliances and gateways used for monitoring and controlling the home environment for security, energy management and lifestyle applications.”
IEEE 802.15.4 is a standard that specifies the physical layer and media access control for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs).
The statement said that many newly manufactured smart devices such as set-up boxes and internet gateways already contain ZigBee connectivity – affording developers of smart home devices the opportunity to introduce new solutions that can be connected to household’s sensor network.
A set-up box or set-top unit is defined as an information appliance device that generally contains a TV-tuner input and displays output connects to a television set and an external source of signal, turning the source signal into content in a form that can then be displayed on the television screen or other display.
