The Bureau of Reclamation is a federal agency under the US Department of the Interior, which oversees water resource management.
The announced $568,662 in grant funding will be directed towards the Small Scale Water Efficiency Project to help some 11 projects deploy water efficiency programmes.
The Small-Scale Water Efficiency Project falls under the WaterSMART grant programme and is designed to help utilities improve a small portion of their water distribution networks and help residential consumers to reduce their water usage and costs.
For instance, San Bernardino county and the Greater Wenatchee Irrigation District will use their shares of the announced funding to replace existing water meters with advanced water meters.
With the new meters, the two parties aim to reduce non-revenue expenses and help consumers practice sustainable water usage behaviours by providing them with real-time water consumption data.
The Pixley Irrigation District in California and the New Sweden Irrigation District will use $37,780 and $6,518 grants, respectively, for integrating their water distribution systems with SCADA technologies.
The announced $568,662 is the Bureau of Reclamation’s first award under the Small Scale Water Efficiency Project this year.
The department is receiving project proposals from utility departments through to mid-May.
Meanwhile, the city of Bakersfield in the US state of California approved the introduction of a new scheme to provide funding for energy and water efficiency programmes.
The decision to introduce the new energy and water efficiency funding scheme falls under efforts by the city to expand existing and introduce new energy and water efficiency programmes with the aim to reduce consumer water and energy bills.
The new scheme will support the city’s existing efficiency funding platform HERO Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programme.
In California, the HERO programme is being deployed to help utility firms including PG&E, Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas Company to ensure the reliability of their energy distribution systems and reduce carbon emissions through increased adoption of renewable energy resources.
