Malaysia bets to improve efficiency for residential users

The Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water launched an energy efficiency project for domestic consumers.

TNB is state owned and the only utility company operating in Malaysia. The company provides services to some 8.4 million energy consumers. The launched programme Home Energy Report aims to help residential consumers to reduce their energy consumption behaviours in order to reduce monthly energy bills.

The energy efficiency initiative will use behavioural science and data analytics to identify energy efficiency potentials and provide consumers with recommendations on how to achieve energy efficiency targets.

Following a successful pilot of the Home Energy Report initiative from August 2015 to July 2016, the programme proved to be a significant measure that can be employed to help stabilise the Malaysian grid system. Some 200,000 consumers in Klang Valley, Putrajaya and Malacca participated in the pilot phase. A total of 13,979MWh of energy enough to avoid the emission of 9,900 metric tonnes, was saved.

The initiative is being funded by the Malaysian Electricity Supply Industry Account MESITA and TNB.

The second phase will include the provision of new services such as the Home Energy Analysis , which will provide consumers with data on the amount of energy each and every home appliance uses.

All consumers within TNB’s energy distribution network will have access to energy efficiency tips on the company’s online consumer portal.

In addition, some 450,000 consumers have been selected to get added communication channels such as receiving their energy efficiency data via emails and in print form. The data will also include a comparison of their energy usage with other consumers.

TNB and AMI rollout

The news follows an announcement made by TNB of its plan to use advanced metering infrastructure to improve consumer energy efficiency and the operations of utilities operating in the region.

In late May, the utility said it formed a strategic partnership with Trilliant to support its nationwide plan for smart meter deployment. Under the partnership, the two companies will jointly develop a go-to market strategy to drive innovation and deliver transformative smart communications solutions to utilities across Asia Pacific and other select regions.
