The locally based engineering firm will supply and install SCADA relays and related software to help Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) to remotely control and operate its 55 substations in Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar.
The SCADA relays will enable PSPCL to collect and store grid event data from 29 substations in Ludhiana, 14 in Amritsar and 12 in Jalandhar to improve energy distribution to some 4,000,000 consumers in the three cities.
The new SCADA system will help the state-owned utility company to remotely identify and attend to faulty grid assets to reduce the occurrence and duration of power outages.
According to India.com, the SCADA relays will enable PSPCL to increase the life span of its grid infrastructure and reduce the utility’s operational costs incurred in implementing manual grid maintenance initiatives.
The deal is part of a programme being deployed by PSPCL to modernise its grid system, improve the reliability of its grid system and customer services through the adoption of smart grid solutions.
In the second quarter of 2016, PSPCL partnered with mobile money transfer firm Vodafone M-PESA to improve how consumers pay their electricity bills.
In a press statement, the energy provider said its partnership with Vodafone M-PESA will allow its customers to securely pay their bills online via the digital app.
M-PESA is a digital wallet service provided by Vodafone to simplify money transfers, bills and utility payments, merchant payments and business solutions across the Indian state of Punjab.
Arvind Vohra, operations director of Vodafone India, said: “Partnership with the PSPCL is one such initiative that bridges the need for a simple, timely and cashless electricity bill payment solution through the mobile phone.”
The app is expected to contribute largely towards digitising electricity bill payments through its host of 3,000 outlets in which PSPCL consumers can convert their cash into digital money for payment of bills as well as advanced prepayment of electricity.
