The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) extended its partnership with Itron to fully implement a smart grid rollout project.

The utility will expand Itron’s Gen 5 IoT communications network to connect 670,000 smart electric meters.

This will help JPS to improve customer service, drive grid reliability, enhance post-storm restorations and enable revenue realisation.

JPS had previously deployed the Gen 5 communications network to connect 51,000 electric meters deployed in 2016 and 2017; and 35,000 smart streetlights installed in 2017.

The Jamaican utility will manage the system through Itron’s cloud-based Software-as-a-Service solution.

“Over the last few years, JPS has been transforming our lighting and electricity services by modernising and connecting our infrastructure. We are pleased to continue collaborating with Itron in this process,” said Gary Barrow, chief technology officer at JPS.

According to Barrow, with Itron’s open, standards-based platform the utility can ensure efficient delivery of electricity to the island and unify all its devices on one network.

“We are thrilled to continue working with JPS to integrate a real-time smart grid solution that will enable JPS to empower customers and better manage energy,” added, Mark de Vere White, president of Itron’s Electricity business line.

“In addition to modernising its current infrastructure, these improvements will prepare JPS for the future, allowing new applications to be quickly added to the network,” de Vere White said.
