Itron Riva offers platform to boost app development

Technology and services firm Itron is expanding its app developers community to include battery-powered devices

In a press statement, the US-headquartered firm said it is expanding its Itron Riva Developers Community to include the development of applications for battery-powered devices.

The community invites developers to create applications using the Itron Riva platform, further enabling an ecosystem of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. This is, according to the tech company, the first-of-its-kind distributed intelligence and IoT platform that supports sensing technologies and dynamic applications at the device level.

As many gas, water and smart city IoT applications, such as pipeline safety, water conservation and smart city sensors, do not have access to AC power, Itron Riva Development Kits will be available with a battery-powered Itron Riva board, enabling third-party developers to create applications for these devices. The kits are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2017.

Global IoT market presence

The development falls under efforts by Itron to enable global utilities and cities to become smarter by integrating innovative IoT services into their operations. Says Roberto Aiello, managing director of the Itron Idea Labs: “Itron has decades of experience building long-lasting, highly-reliable and field-proven battery-powered communications. We are bringing this capability to our IoT platform with an exceptionally long battery life and expanding the possibilities of what our community of developers can create.”

Aiello believes "the Itron Riva Developers Community is accelerating app development and delivering on the promise of the IoT to empower smarter utilities and smarter cities worldwide.”

This announcement follows news from Navigant Research which named Itron as a leader in utility field area networking.

Itron was ranked the leader in the Navigant Research Leaderboard Report for Utility Field Area Networking for its OpenWay Riva IoT solution strategy and execution.

The report examined the strategy and execution of 10 leading utility FAN providers.

The report rated grid edge connectivity providers were rated on 12 criteria including their vision, go to market strategy, partnerships,  production strategy, geographic presence,  product sales, marketing and distribution, and performance. The report aims to profile, rate and rank developers and providers of IoT solutions with the goal of providing an objective assessment of their relative strengths and weaknesses in the global utility FAN market.

Itron received high marks in the report for its vision and product portfolio, including its OpenWay Riva IoT solution, which delivers distributed intelligence, advanced FAN communications and broad device interoperability over a standards-based network.
