We believe that there will continue to be an increase in the number of customers opting to utilize prepaid electricity metering across the US and Europe.

Itron secures Gartner recognition in MDM market for fourth time

Global energy and water management solutions firm, Itron, has been named a leader in development and provision of meter data management (MDM) products in 2016.

In a press statement, Itron said it secured a listing in Gartner's annual report on MDM products for development, deployment and usage of its Itron Enterprise Edition (IEE) meter data management solution by global utilities.

This year’s Gartner recognition of Itron's role in helping utility firms optimise their operations and grid management through MDM is the fourth since 2013.

Benefits of meter data management

Commenting on the development, Bruce Douglas, senior vice president of software and services at Itron, said: “Itron Enterprise Edition (IEE) MDM is evolving to meet the needs of an IoT world, where more data processing and analysis is taking place in edge devices rather than solely in MDM systems and the back office. This means supporting a broader range of devices, data sets and protocols than just metering and having the intelligence and business flows to enable analytic processing to take place where it makes the most sense.”

The solutions provider has been named in the report for usage of its technology for management of data from over 38 million smart meters deployed in grid networks of 76 utility firms.

Itron claims that its cloud-based IEE meter data management Software as a Service (SaaS) helps utility firms improve the reliability of their grid networks by providing them with real-time network management.

The solution enables functionalities including remote transformer load management, voltage analysis, theft and meter tampering as well the development and operation of digital customer service dashboards.

In the report, Gartner evaluated the ability of 14 MDM technology vendors in helping global utilities to optimise the capabilities of their smart grids through improved management of smart meter data.

Gartner wrote: “leaders in this market normally are included on shortlists for MDM products for all types of utilities worldwide. They should perform profitably, grow their revenue and have a presence in all major markets. Their functionality must be above-average, and their technology and scalability must be leading-edge…”

Smart meter deployment

The news follows an announcement made in mid-November by French electricity distribution operator, Enedis, that it partnered with Itron to deploy its second phase smart meters project.

Itron will supply a large share of some 4.6 million G3 Linky smart meters, to be installed by the grid operator in its second phase of the Linky smart meters project in the first quarter of 2017 through to 2018.

In the first phase, Itron supplied Enedis with some 1.5 million G3 Linky smart meters.

The full-scale deployment of the Linky smart meters project in France follows a successful pilot of the technology, done by Enedis and Itron between 2008 and 2010.  [Frost and Sullivan recognises Itron as ‘Smart Grid Solutions Company of the Year’].

Itron is developing Linky smart electric meters at its manufacturing plant in Chasseneuil, France.

The automated electric meters will also ensure consumers are accurately billed.
