In a press statement, DEWA said the installation of the 100 EV charging ports will increase the number of EV charging stations installed under the company's EV infrastructure project, 'Green Charger', to 200.
DEWA launched the Green Charger programme in 2014 to increase its EV infrastructure and promote the adoption of EVs to reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector.
Amongst the 100 charging stations set to be installed include some ultra-fast chargers for charging 48KW AC, 50KW DC and ChadeMO EVs within 20 to 40 minutes at petrol stations.
Under the EV infrastructure project, DEWA said it will install Wall-charging stations randomly for 22KW EVs.
Commenting on the development, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA, said the initiative will help DEWA to meet targets to increase its clean energy resource portfolios in line with the UAE Vision 2021, Dubai Plan 2021 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 programmes.
The three programmes are designed to make Dubai the world's smartest city and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors through the use of innovative and sustainable technologies.
The completion of phase two of the Green Charger initiative will also help Dubai meet targets to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021, under the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy.
The announcement made by DEWA follows the introduction of programmes and policies such as the citywide EV charging tariff of 29 fils per KWh made by the Dubai government under efforts to increase the adoption of EVs in the city.
Apart from the EV charging tariff, the Dubai Supreme Council launched the Dubai Green Mobility programme under which all government organisations are stipulated to at least have 2% of their vehicle purchases hybrid or electric vehicles.
The Dubai Green Mobility programme was introduced in 2016 and by 2021 through to 2030 will force government parastatals to have 10% of their vehicle purchases EVs.
“These achievements have helped to strengthen the hybrid and electric vehicle market, encouraged electric vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, and stimulated the use of these environmentally-friendly vehicles for all Dubai residents. The electric vehicles are attracting a big number of people, due to their financial savings in addition to the use of zero-emission vehicles that keep the environment clean and sustainable,” concluded Al Tayer.
