Internet of Things: Atmel and Intel partner on IoT security

In the US, designer and manufacturer of microcontroller technology Atmel has partnered with semiconductor chip maker Intel in bid to enhance security of Internet of Things applications.

The two Californian companies will seek to improve the security of Internet of Things applications through a platform incorporating Intel's Enhanced Privacy ID (EPID) technology and Atmel SmartConnect wireless solutions.

Computer Business Review (CBR) explains that “Atmel will support Intel's Enhanced Privacy ID (EPID) technology on all of its Atmel SmartConnect wireless solutions to enhance secure cloud provisioning.”

Atmel said that “security of Internet of Things applications is an important factor for enabling seamless connection between the edge node to the cloud.

“Around a billion devices are expected to be IoT enabled devices anticipated by 2020.”

Fortifying Internet of Things tech

Intel’s Enhanced Privacy ID (EPID) tech is claimed to secure identification and linking of Internet of Things devices. Group membership can be determined without revealing the identity of the specific platform, adds CBR.

The solution developed through the collaboration, will enable developers to use Intel EPID identification in their solutions when using Atmel wireless solutions.

Atmel wireless solutions vice president Kaivan Karimi said: "Implementing Intel EPID offers IoT designers a truly seamless edge-to-cloud Internet of Things platform with proven security options available with our broad Internet of Things portfolio.

"With this new technology, Atmel's SmartConnect wireless and IoT solutions now support Intel EPID, a security technology that has been proven over the last 5 years."
