Nokia is partnering with CEVA, licensor of signal processing platforms, in developing its ReefShark baseband System on Chips (SoCs).

Nokia claims its wireless communications platform ReefShark SoCs will help communications Service Providers to reduce deployment and operational costs of 4.9G and 5G network infrastructure.

The platform is based on 3GPP 5G new radio specifications and helps reduce the size of each cell site by 50% in addition to improving energy efficiency by 85%.

The technology improves the intelligence and performance of multiple-input and multiple-output antennas.

For instance, as a result of integration with Nokia’s AirScale baseband module, the ReefShark SoCs will help increase the capacity of data and telemetry speed.

Integration triples throughput from Nokia's advanced 28 Gbps, to up to 85 Gbps per module.

The chipsets have embedded artificial intelligence capabilities to enable augmented deep learning to trigger automated smart and rapid actions of networks

Nokia is using its experience acquired from Silicon Valley through its Nokia Bell Labs in developing the platform.

Under the agreement with Nokia, CEVA has adapted its deployed CEVA-XC architecture framework to address the massive increase in signal processing complexity in multi-RAT (Radio Access Technology) network architectures.

Commenting on partnership with CEVA, Henri Tervonen, Head of R&D Foundation, Mobile Networks, Nokia, said: "The CEVA-XC framework is a highly renowned DSP architecture for communications processing and is ideal to meet the stringent performance requirements of next generation 4.9G and 5G base stations.

"We, along with our silicon partners, have collaborated closely with CEVA on developing a custom version of the CEVA-XC for ReefShark, adopting new practices, methodologies and advanced process nodes that allow us to fully realise the capabilities that the 5G standard will bring."

"Issachar Ohana, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales at CEVA, added: "This collaboration is a direct result of our strong competencies and investment in advanced DSP technologies for next generation heterogeneous networks. It further expands our foothold as the end-to-end wireless DSP provider, covering base stations, terminals, cellular IoT and any other form of cellular enabled device."

To date, three of the world's leading base station original equipment manufacturers have selected CEVA-XC DSPs for their 5G base station processor designs.
