Washington, DC, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- November 27, 2006 – A new ‘Six Degrees of Energy Efficiency Challenge’ has been launched by the Alliance to Save Energy and 29 partners from its ‘Power in Your Hands’ campaign. The Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) is a coalition of prominent business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders who promote the efficient and clean use of energy worldwide to benefit consumers, the environment, economy, and national security.

The concept of ‘six degrees of separation’ is that everyone in the world is connected to everyone else through a chain of at most five acquaintances. The challenge is a take off on the whole ‘six degrees’ concept. In the case of energy efficiency, the ‘six degrees’ are the ever-widening circle of effects of our energy use, starting with the energy prices we pay and our comfort at home, and expanding to include the air we breathe and our respiratory health; our country’s economic well-being; our country’s energy security and safety; and finally, the world we leave behind.

A six-question quiz and a six-part pledge are at the heart of the challenge, which will offer participants an opportunity to receive discounts on energy efficiency products. Taking the challenge is easy to do on the interactive 6° Challenge web site.

The site will:

  • Inform consumers that increasing and wasteful energy use affects six key areas of our lives.
  • Provide consumers with six easy energy efficiency tips they can implement in their own homes and vehicles.
  • Challenge them to take at least one of those six easy steps.
Provide money-saving coupons for energy-efficient products.

“Energy efficiency is for everyone,” said Alliance President Kateri Callahan. “We’re conducting a makeover of a needy family’s home to demonstrate many of the easy things consumers can do to start saving energy and money today. The Power is in Your Hands partners are committing their time and resources to teaching consumers how to take individual steps to not only save themselves money, but also by doing so to improve their communities and the world by advancing energy efficiency. This campaign uniquely links tens to hundreds of thousands of people together to leverage individual action for the greater good.”
