Saft has partnered with Uninterruptible Power Supply manufacturer Borri and Kinki Sharyo to provide its energy storage batteries and related technologies to Doha Metro in Qatar, Middle East.

The project includes the supply of 150,000 Saft backup batteries with a total of over 100 million amp hours.

The nickel batteries will be installed in 37 metro stations, on trains and on driverless metro trains owned by Doha Metro.

Some 140,000 will be supplied to Doha Metro via Borri to provide UPS services for Station Power Substation systems and will cover signaling, automated fare collection, telecom and SCADA, platform screen doors and tunnel ventilation.

The batteries will provide back-up power of up to 8 hours at 37 train stations on the company’s three metro lines and to power trains in the event of an interruption on the main grid

For instance, if the main power supply should fail, the batteries will provide backup power for the CCTV, emergency lighting and firefighting equipment.

In partnership with Kinki Sharyo, Saft is providing Doha Metro with batteries to power 75-sets of three car driverless metro trains.

The batteries will provide back-up for 60 minutes to support emergency lighting, air conditioning, door operation and communication systems in the event of an interruption to the main power supply.

Saft is developing the batteries at its factories in Sweden and France. Deliveries have started and are scheduled for completion in 2019.

The company claims its batteries are compactable with the climate of Qatar, where temperatures are very high and at times exceed +45°C.

Doha Metro is implementing its automated, driverless train project under the Qatar National Vision 2030, a framework drafted to help the country improve quality of life for its population and enhance its tourism sector by adopting innovative technologies enhancing its transport systems.
