The Jamaican government is hoping to introduce net metering before the end of the year, as part of its energy conservation initiative. Net metering involves the sale of energy generated by solar or wind power installations in private homes or businesses back to the utility concerned.

The Office of Utilities Regulation has been asked to prepare a policy framework for net metering, but concerns have also been voiced that the loss of revenue to utilities if it is introduced could result in energy price increases for customers who are not part of the initiative. On the upside, there is less pressure on the grid during peak periods if some customers are generating their own power.
