Eandis

In Belgium, energy distribution system operator Eandis has selected smart grid solutions firm Alfen for the provision of an energy storage system.

The energy storage system TheBattery will be installed at Eandis' logistical center in Lokeren. The storage system will be operational before the end of the first quarter 2018.

TheBattery will help the grid operator change its Lokeren facility from fossil fuel reliant into an energy neutral facility. According to a statement, the project will enable the shift from fossil fuel powered machinery and vehicles towards electricity as source of energy.

The 140Kw energy storage system will help the grid operator to optimise self-consumption of the rooftop solar energy generation. Eandis' has recently added 375KWp of solar at the facility.

The solutions provider will supply software for remote management and operation of the energy storage system. The software will help Eandis' to manage the flow of energy from generation to consumption.

Jean Pierre Hollevoet, Director Asset Management and Supply Chain at Eandis comments: "…we anticipate that more and more customers, connected to our electricity grid, will implement energy storage systems in the future.

“We want to be prepared for the incorporation of such systems in our grid and therefore we want to gain experience on manageability, cost-of-ownership and impact on operational efficiency of such a storage system."

Adopting new technologies and business models is expected to help Eandis to improve its services to 2.7 million electric customers in 229 cities and municipalities throughout Flanders in Belgium.

Yves Vercammen, sales manager for Alfen in Belgium, comments: "…This project demonstrates the increasing demand for decentralised renewable energy solutions that require smart energy solutions."
