Carina Technologies has introduced its Automated Meter Disconnect (AMD), which allows electricity utilities to read, disconnect and reconnect their meters from their offices, using a patented wireless technology. The company says that some 3 million electricity meters (out of a total of about 130 million) were individually disconnected and reconnected more than four times last year, and the cost to utilities to perform this activity was estimated at $1.2 billion.

The company has been in existence for less than a year, but has already seen the first AMD units being installed in several utilities in the US, including for Cinergy’s
1.4 million electricity and gas customers.
