Enersource Hydro Mississauga has launched a major trial of smart metering in preparation for the Ontario government’s target of installing smart meters at every home and business by the end of 2010. The pilot will evaluate many aspects of smart meter technology, using the EnergyAxis metering system developed by Elster Metering.

Some 550 homes in a community area that is well treed have received the new meters. The area was chosen for the pilot as it provides the utility with an ideal test location for wireless communications technology. The project will also give the utility the opportunity to test a variety of conservation programmes, educational tools, and technologies such as water heater load control.
