Interview with Jose Antonio Valdez, VP and Head of Marketing and Customer Solutions, Meralco
The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) – the largest distribution utility in the Philippines, with approximately 5.1 million customers – is currently drawing up its advanced metering infrastructure roadmap, with prepay as the first service. The Philippines’ Energy Regulatory Commission has approved a 40,000 meter pilot, and Meralco has tapped GE to integrate Orga Systems’ billing system with Ecologic Analytics’ meter data management system.
Endesa had over 3.5 million smart meters installed by the end of April 2013 at residential customer premises in the regions it serves as an electricity distributor, equivalent to 30% of its overall smart meter installation program in Spain, the company has reported.
These new meters – in the regions of Catalonia, Aragón, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Andalusia and Extremadura – are operated from the remote management operations center, which was launched in 2010.
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Alstom Grid have established a joint venture, KEPCO Alstom Power Electronics Systems (KAPES), with a focus on delivering high voltage direct current (HVDC) projects in Korea.
The partnership aims at increasing Korean transmission grid capabilities based on Alstom technology. The joint venture is implemented with a shareholding of 49% for Alstom and 51% for KEPCO.
Helsinki, Finland --- (METERING.COM) --- May 23, 2013 - Residential energy prices in Europe during 2012 continued their upward trend since the beginning of 2010 and are at their highest level in four years, according to the latest European Residential Energy Price Report.
Further, there are also shocking differences in electricity and gas prices depending on where a customer lives in Europe. For electricity these range from over €0.30/kWh in Denmark to around €0.14 in France and Greece, and for gas from over €0.11/kWh in Denmark to less than €0.06/kWh in Britain.
Liberty Lake, WA, U.S.A. and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil --- (METERING.COM) --- May 22, 2013 - Itron, Inc. has entered into a strategic alliance with Brazilian technology company Choice to integrate and jointly market its non-technical loss (NTL) solution to utilities around the world, with a strong focus in Brazil.
El Paso, TX, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- May 21, 2013 - The U.S. Army and Lockheed Martin have commissioned the first U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) grid-tied microgrid integrating both renewable resources and energy storage at Fort Bliss, Texas.
The project was funded by the DoD's Environmental Security Technology Certification Program.
The Fort Bliss grid-tied microgrid is designed to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs while providing the capability to operate independent of the electric utility grid when needed to provide energy security.
Düsseldorf, Germany --- (METERING.COM) --- May 21, 2013 - Power company E.ON is to work with METRO Cash & Carry to foster the growth of distributed energy.
As a start E.ON will install technologically advanced gas-fired micro combined-heat-and-power (CHP) units at two METRO Cash & Carry wholesale stores in Germany and two in Russia. The units will heat the stores and meet a portion of their electricity needs. Depending on the size of the store, the units’ electric capacity will range from 250 to 800 kW.
Glasgow, Scotland --- (METERING.COM) --- May 20, 2013 - The University of Strathclyde’s Power Networks Demonstration Center (PNDC) was officially opened last week by Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond.
The center, believed to be the first of its kind in Europe, aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies and convert ideas and research into low carbon solutions for the electricity industry of the future.
Lahore, Pakistan --- (METERING.COM) --- May 20, 2013 - MicroTech (www.mtilimited.com) was selected to implement the first of a kind implementation of AMI technology in Pakistan in a project awarded by Power Information Technology Company (PITC) and sponsored by USAID to monitor load and losses at grid and feeder level.
Voorhees, NJ, U.S.A. and Rishon Le-Zion, Israel --- (METERING.COM) --- May 17, 2013 - American Water and Steam Control Ltd. are to partner on a 2-year project to develop an advanced pressure management system with a $1.8 million award from the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation.
Brussels, Belgium --- (METERING.COM) --- May 17, 2013 - Building and expanding renewable energy installations in the wrong locations in Europe could cost €45 billion in unnecessary investment by 2030, according to Siemens – an amount that corresponds to 4-5 times the current annual investment in solar and wind power plant construction in Germany.
Siemens’ analysis of the electrical power producing systems across Europe finds considerable potential for optimization, especially in connection with plans to expand power generation from renewable energy sources. The crux lies in the choice of location with the estimated saving being possible if installations were built at the sites in Europe that offer the highest power yields.
Melbourne, Australia --- (METERING.COM) --- May 16, 2013 - SP AusNet has selected NetComm Wireless Limited, through its integration partner Ericsson, to supply the 3G communications card component for the Victorian government’s mandatory state-wide rollout of smart meters.
The initial order will represent revenue of Au$12.5 million (US$12.4 million) to NetComm Wireless.
Abuja, Nigeria --- (METERING.COM) --- May 16, 2013 - The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued an order mandating the country’s 11 electricity distributors to implement the new “credit advance payment for meter installation” (CAPMI) scheme from May 14.
The scheme will continue until such time as the distribution core investors take over the distributors and begin to fully implement their metering plans, which is expected by quarter 3 2013.
Cape Town, South Africa --- (METERING.COM) --- May 15, 2013 - Whether all customers in Africa should get smart metering is an open question, with African Utility Week delegates participating in the metering track fairly evenly divided between for and against.
However, there was overwhelming support for smart metering for C&I customers, and almost all rejected the view that smart metering was not appropriate for their business.
Koblenz, Germany --- (METERING.COM) --- May 15, 2013 - With the module COMfor.enVIEW.MTR, GÖRLITZ AG offers a solution permitting energy data to be recorded by the Echelon residential meter for request and visualization via IDSpecto.enVIEW on mobile end devices or PCs.
Due to the simple “plug & play” installation, even existing meters can be retrofitted with this functionality.
