PG&E installs first SmartMeter

Peter DarbeeSan Francisco, CA, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- November 17, 2006 – Leaders from U.S. utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) have celebrated the installation of the first SmartMeter™ electric and gas meters, kicking off a five-year program to deploy 10.3 million such meters throughout PG&E’s service territory. The SmartMeter program will eventually offer a wide range of customer service benefits, while reducing utility costs.

IEC publishes new standard for meter data exchange

Southwest Water Company, a provider of services to over two million people in ten U.S. states, has announced the appointment of David Stanton as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development – a newly-created position.

Stanton, who has a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University, most recently served as executive vice president of Earth Tech, a division of Tyco International, Inc. and an international environmental water and wastewater services provider. Before that he held senior management positions with a number of companies in the water and wastewater industry.


New utility appointments at Capgemini

Consultancy Capgemini has announced several new appointments which will build on its momentum in the utility industry.

John Christens has joined Capgemini Americas Outsourcing Services (AOS) as CEO of Capgemini Energy, a Dallas-based joint venture that provides business process and information technology outsourcing solutions to utilities. He succeeds Bob Pryor, who was chosen to lead Capgemini’s AOS division earlier this year, allowing Pryor to focus on his new role of serving a broad range of industries, including the utility sector.


ScottishPower’s profits anger consumers

The company says the results were boosted by its non-retail division and strong performance at its coal-fired power plants, but domestic customers are weighing these profits against the price hikes they have had to face in recent times.


New Zealand utility may sell its metering assets

No firm decision has yet been taken, but the utility is in talks with possible buyers. The assets may fetch as much as NZ$100 million ($66 million).

New version of meter data collection software
Kenda Southampton, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- November 15, 2006 – U.K.-based Kenda Electronic Systems has introduced a new version of its MDCS metering data collection software package used in tariff metering systems.

Operating in conjunction with Kenda’s Meteor range of remote data collection outstations, the software acquires metering data for the specified demand period (normally 30 minutes) stores it in a database, and performs calculations to provide total values and costs for billing purposes.


Improved energy billing and metering helps customer decision-making
