Get connected at Smart Grids Africa: Only one week to go!Rising energy prices, global warming, power outages and load shedding are front page news in Africa, threatening industry leaders and consumers alike. But how do utilities ensure supply security for the future? Discuss which technologies can transform the “dumb grid” to a “smart grid”, making it more efficient and changing the way utilities deliver services.
SMART GRIDS AFRICA will educate participants on scenarios, strategies and the potential of the smart grid for Africa. Program topics include: Get connected at Smart Grids Africa – only 2 weeks to go!Smart Grids Africa will educate participants on scenarios, strategies and the potential of the smart grid for Africa. It will look at sustainability issues, explore business models, and demonstrate how building the next generation grid can improve overall operational efficiencies for the continent.
There has never been a better time to define and discuss the role of the smart grid in Africa, and Smart Grids Africa will provide the necessary toolkit to implement the most efficient, manageable technology available today! Leading technology vendors sponsor Smart Grids AfricaThe Smart Grids Africa seminar and executive forum being held from July 28-30, 2008 is sponsored by leading technology and IT vendors, including HP, Cisco and SAP. Smart Grids Africa features a two-day seminar, Smart Grid 101 on developing a roadmap for African utilities, as well as a conference with international case studies.
The seminar will be led by Doug Houseman, who has spent over 30 years in the utility and consulting industries. He has worked in all facets of the utility industry, starting as a lineman in the 1970s and working his way up to manager of a 300,000 customer multi-commodity utility that had water, gas, and electricity in all its forms. Houseman has worked on six continents with utilities on a number of issues. An engineer by training, he has a technical as well as a business understanding of how utilities work. He is comfortable in the board room giving advice, talking to regulators and working in the field with the linemen. His background includes nuclear, coal, gas and wind generation. He is also the lead investigator for the CEATI “Electric Distribution Roadmap 2025” and is involved in many industry groups include the IEEE PES emerging technology working group, as well as AMI-SEC. Companies that Houseman has worked with include EdF, E.On, Sempra, HydroOne, TXU, FP&L, Energy Australia, Singapore Power, and Exelon. Smart Grids Africa 2008: PROGRAM BROCURE AVAILABLE NOW!‘Smart Grids Africa’, which takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 28-30 July, 2008, features a two-day seminar on ‘Developing a roadmap for African utilities’ as well as a conference with international case studies.
The Distribution Roadmap Workshop is based on 7 years of work for various organizations, including EPRI, Modern Grid, and CEA Technologies. A set of 4 reports were published by CEA Tech called the Distribution Utility Technology Roadmap 2025. The workshop takes full advantage of the work that has been done by all the partners in looking into the future. Updates to the materials now take the roadmap out to 2030. The Smart Energy Alliance members offer a series of workshops over a 2 to 3 day period to help a utility determine if they have a solid view on the future of distribution, start down the path to a “smart grid,” introduce a broad cross-section of the engineering and planning staff to the idea of a smart grid, and introduce utility executive to the capabilities of the SEA partners. The workshop has been given for more than 30 utilities on 4 continents.
