San Diego Gas & Electric – a smart meter leader
Interview with Michael R. Niggli, COO, SDG&E and SoCalGas

Please start by giving an update on San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) smart meter rollout?

SDG&E, with its vendor VSI, already has installed more than 450,000 digital smart meters – with the goal of completing the installation of 1.4 million electric meters and 900,000 gas modules by end of next year. At that pace, SDG&E will be first utility in the U.S. to convert its entire service territory to smart meter technology.

World Meter Design Congress: One month to go!
Final preparations are underway for the 3rd Annual World Meter Design Congress, which will take place in little under one month from March 7-9 in San Diego, California. With one month to go, there has already been a phenomenal response from utility meter design professionals worldwide, with more than double last year’s number of pre-registered attendees and a sold out exhibit hall. In 2010, the World Meter Design Congress will be co-located with America’s premium utility metering conference, Metering, Billing/MDM America and expects to attract over 700 utility metering professionals together.
Taking the Smart Grid to the next level in Canada

The challenge of creating a greener and, at the same time, sustainable energy sector in Canada through technology will be the main theme at a high-level gathering of Ontario’s top utility professionals in Toronto later this month.  More than 60 experts will address the Smart Energy Canada and Canadian Water Meter Summit conference and exhibition in what the industry regards as Canada’s most important smart energy event, taking place from January 31 to February 2, 2010.

Smart Energy Canada and the Canadian Water Meter Summit 2010 are aimed at utility professionals, regulators and technology and service providers from Nova Scotia to the Yukon and further abroad to discuss the latest developments, case studies and best practices driving Canada’s smart energy future.

Relevant energy topics, some particularly pertinent to Ontario, which will be unpacked in Toronto later this month include:

Spintelligent announces Smart Energy International Conference & Technology Expo coming to Silicon Valley
Spintelligent, A Division of Clarion Events, is pleased to announce that the Smart Energy International Conference & Technology Expo will be held in the heart of Silicon Valley on September 8 – 9, 2010 at the San Jose Marriott.

The Smart Energy International Conference & Technology Expo will feature dynamic, interactive content and exhibitions from across the smart energy spectrum from the grid to renewable to vehicles to consumer issues.   The conference will pull together the three main issues driving the successful realization of smart energy on a large scale: Integration of technology and systems, Data integration, management, and usage, and applications that will effectively leverage this integrated infrastructure.

Poland defines strategy for smart metering implementation framework
Introduction of smart grids is a great opportunity for the Polish energy sector - a huge project that will connect the energy sector with modern technologies. It is a milestone in empowering the consumers position on the electricity market and increasing energy efficiency. The Polish power sector cannot remain indifferent to the challenges of the ambitious nature of civilization, associated with the modernization of the electricity grid. We cannot afford failure in relation to other countries that have implemented the development of smart grids hoping to benefit from a combination of "traditional power" with new technologies - stresses Mr. Mariusz Swora, President of URE.

The President of URE stressed that implementation of this ambitious project will change the situation on the energy market, enforce the position of consumers, giving them the necessary information, which will help them to manage its energy consumption and lower their energy bills. For the Energy Regulator the key issue is to define the state's role in the implementation of smart metering.

The success of the introduction of a smart metering system in Poland is dependent on many factors. Currently, the primary task is to take a decision how to implement a smart metering system, and what legislative changes, therefore, are necessary. There is also a need to coordinate actions in order to achieve uniformity of the technical solutions and precision (as possible) in defining the functionality of such a system.

During the 4rd Smart Metering Central & Eastern Europe high level industry experts will present and discuss the way forward for the further expansion of smart metering in the CEE region. This year's event will give you an in-depth look at the challenges, opportunities and recent developments in the smart metering industry in Central & Eastern Europe.

The 2-day event will give you the opportunity to:
  • Network during several social functions with over 150 high-level participants
  • Listen to 20 expert speakers discussing the key issues facing the metering industry
  • Visit the exhibition and explore trends and new technologies
Conference topics will be related to:
  • The drivers behind smart metering
  • The need for legislative changes to implement smart metering
  • International roll-out experiences – lessons learned
  • Handling and managing massive data volumes
  • Customer involvement in the smart metering implementation process
  • Value added services – maximizing your profit
  • The modernization of the grid through a smart metering system
SPEAKING OPPORTUNITIES
The conference programme is developed to provide a forum, which identifies, discusses and forecasts developments in the industry. Top-level speakers from all key industry segments will present their views using case studies presentations and interactive panels.
  • Are you interested in taking part in the conference as a speaker?
  • Do you wish to share new and innovative experiences/ visions?
