Sydney, Australia --- (METERING.COM) --- May 25, 2012 - The Australian government’s Smart Grid, Smart City project being run by Ausgrid is being supplied with advanced meters by Landis+Gyr, the company has announced.

“The meters provide consumers with capacity for real-time metering and management of their energy use,” said Steve Jeston, CEO of Landis+Gyr Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. “We are very pleased to partner with Ausgrid. The fact that this smart meter has been developed by our local team in Australia makes us all the more proud.”

The Smart Grid, Smart City trial is an Au$100 million (US$98 million) project to demonstrate smart grid concepts on a commercial scale. The technology trials will take place in Newcastle, Scone, Newington, Ku-ring-gai, and the Sydney CBD areas.

Landis+Gyr is providing meters to 26,000 homes involved in the trial. Deployment of the E350 U series smart meters, which were developed at Landis+Gyr’s Centre of Excellence in Sydney, has commenced. The smart meters will connect to several different customer feedback technologies to be tested, including websites and in-home displays.

Other recent news on the project is that a range of equipment, including smart reclosers, sensors and load break switches, is being installed on the Port Stephens grid to test ways to cut the number and length of blackouts. Tests will also be run to trial different ways of improving the power supply to customers, particularly at the end of a long power line.
