Singapore, Singapore --- (METERING.COM) --- April 12, 2010 - The Singapore-Israel Industrial Development and Research Foundation (SIIRD) is supporting an 18-month project to develop a smart grid compliant smart metering system aimed at bridging the gap between the old and the new standards in the various metering systems and enabling real-time monitoring of smart metering devices.

The project, one of four with a total funding allocation of S$10.6 million (US$7.6 million), should allow electrical utility companies to construct an open architecture smart metering system for their electricity distribution that prevents theft of electricity, increases their revenues and optimizes the use of their expensive infrastructure assets.

The project partners are Israel-based fabless semiconductor company Yitran Communications Ltd and Singapore smart meter developer BBS Telecommunications Pte Ltd.

The product to be developed is a new generation smart metering system, which will comply with the latest smart grid end-to-end TC57 and ANSI C12.22 standards. With powerline communication to allow a “no new wires” connectivity between the smart metering devices and simplify the installation procedures, the combination of the technologies of the two companies will allow for the development of a potent bi-directional fully-communicating, standards compliant smart metering system for the smart grid.

Both companies stand to gain tremendously from each others’ expertise in complementary fields. Whereas BBS has expertise in meter systems and markets, Yitran has expertise in communication over power line and standards thereof. The joint end-product should offer a cost effective approach towards smart grid implementation by various utilities.
 
The SIIRD is a cooperation between the Singapore Economic Development Board and the Office of the Chief Scientist in Israel to promote, facilitate and support joint industrial R&D projects between companies from Singapore and Israel.
