Danish utility NRGi selects AMI

Aarhus, Denmark --- (METERING.COM) --- October 17, 2008 - Aarhus-based NRGi has selected Echelon’s Networked Energy Services (NES) systems for its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) project.

The project has been awarded to NES value-added reseller partner, Eltel Networks A/S, with meter data management system (MDMS) and enterprise software tools from NES partner Görlitz AG. Under the project, which is targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2008 and be complete by the end of 2011, Eltel will deploy the NES AMI initially to approximately 50,000 of NRGi’s 200,000 customers.

Poul Berthelsen, project manager at NRGi, commented that a strategic goal for NRGi is to deliver products and services to customers that contribute to energy savings and CO2 reductions.

“While metering alone does neither of these, the NES system can enable us to do both,” said Berthelsen. “This solid platform gives us the ability to solve problems we know we have today, and an expandable platform and grid management tools to extend our services in the future.”

NRGi, one of Denmark’s largest utility companies, is the fourth in the country to select the NES system, bringing the total number of NES meters there to 810,000, including all options. Denmark is one of the fastest growing markets in Europe for smart metering systems.

Eltel Networks, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, specializes in the construction, maintenance, and upgrading of electricity and telecommunications networks. Görlitz is one of the leading companies in the European market with devices and systems for energy data management and data services.

Echelon’s NES AMI consists of a family of highly integrated, advanced electronic electricity meters, accessed via a web services based network operating system over an IP networking infrastructure.
