Toronto, ON, Canada --- (METERING.COM) --- June 19, 2008 – Trilliant Incorporated, a provider of intelligent networks that power the smart grid, and Landis+Gyr, a provider of energy management solutions, have announced the deployment of an advanced metering infrastructure project involving three Canadian utilities in Ontario and more than 350,000 residential smart meters.

The Trilliant and Landis+Gyr project provides a next generation energy management solution for Hydro One, one of the ten largest utility companies in North America; subsidiary Hydro One Brampton; and Milton Hydro Distribution, which serves one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada.

Under the venture, launched in 2006, the partners have delivered more than 350,000 Trilliant SecureMesh™ Communications enabled Landis+GyrFOCUS™ residential meters, which support advanced metering, demand response, and time-of-use rates.

With significant technological progress and encouragement from lawmakers and regulators, smart grid communications are expected to revolutionize energy management and grid reliability across the globe. These intelligent communications solutions provide utilities with the two-way flow of data required to manage energy use, efficiency and demand response and network protection. Consumers benefit from lower energy costs, and, crucially, a reduced carbon footprint.

"Ontario has deservedly earned a reputation as one of the leaders in the adoption of smart grid technologies and practices," said Bill Vogel, President and CEO of Trilliant. "These three utilities are effectively putting in place a template for other utility companies to follow, and we're proud to have played a role in that process."

Recent studies have confirmed that smart metering when combined with time-of-use rates can significantly reduce energy consumption. In Ontario, researchers noted that a demand reduction of 6.5% was possible simply from customers having access to data provided by smart meters.

"Smart metering is revolutionizing energy management and driving smart grid adoption around the world," said Richard Mora, President and CEO of Landis+Gyr's Energy Management Products division. "Our combined efforts with Trilliant continue to demonstrate that when electricity customers are armed with information about their usage, they will respond in a way that means lower rates, lower risk of service interruption, and an overall reduction in carbon emissions."
