Warsaw, Poland --- (METERING.COM) --- July 19, 2010 - A team of students from Taiwan have been recognized as one of the winners in the Microsoft-sponsored Imagine Cup 2010 for their smart electric meter, SmarterME.
According to the limited details that are available, SmarterME provides detailed power consumption information to users, including at a glance information on what appliances are consuming power and when, in order to help people reduce their energy use and save money.
The device operates on a cloud platform and uses Windows Mobile and Windows 7 solutions.
Team SmarterME, Yung-Chi Chen, Yi-Sheng Lai and Ming-Chun Lin from the National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu City, developed SmarterME after one of its members received a sky-high electricity bill, commented Lai.
“After that, we were always trying to reduce our power consumption and we realized having a single meter would help track a power footprint. That’s how we came up with the idea for the smarter meter,” said Lai.
Team SmarterME, which was placed first in the Embedded Development category of the Imagine Cup 2010, plans to continue refining its project. Right now, SmarterME is being targeted to the average family, but the team will create a version that can monitor buildings as large as an office tower.
The Imagine Cup is the premier student technology competition and more than 325,000 students from more than 100 countries entered the 2010 event, which had the theme “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.”
