Doha, Qatar and Madrid, Spain --- (METERING.COM) --- December 5, 2012 - Spanish energy group Iberdrola has been commissioned by the state-owned electricity company of Qatar, Kahramaa, to conduct a feasibility study on the implementation of a smart grid system in that country.
     
Iberdrola, through its engineering and construction subsidiary, envisages the project will be conducted in two stages. During the first stage, which will last one year, the team will study the country’s environment, its strategic energy objectives, the infrastructures that will be upgraded and the available technologies related to smart grids, in order to choose the most suitable option for Kahramaa.

In the second stage, which will predictably be executed over a period of two years, a pilot project will be implemented to enable the results of the study to be checked and the preparation of the final deployment of smart grids in Qatar.

According to a company statement, participation in this project will enable Iberdrola to export to other countries the technology it is developing in Spain, where its deployment in seven autonomous regions began this year.

This new infrastructure, based on remote control, enables the company to provide its clients with new products and services, and implies a significant improvement in supply quality. It also contributes to the fulfilment of environmental targets, as it promotes energy efficiency, facilitating the integration of renewable energy into the system and the mass market rollout of electric vehicles.

Other countries where Iberdrola is working outside Spain include the U.S., where more than 550,000 smart metering systems have been installed in the state of Maine, and Scotland, where 30,000 clients in Glasgow will also benefit from this technology.
