Paris and Gif-sur-Yvette, France — (METERING.COM) — December 14, 2012 – French utility EDF and the electric engineering institute Supélec (École supérieured’ électricité) are partnering to establish a joint research institute to prepare for and support the development of smart grids.

RISEGRID (Research Institute for Smarter Electric Grids) is dedicated to the study and modeling of smart distribution networks and their interactions across the electrical system.

The research program of RISEGRID covers four areas:

  • Study of smart electric systems
  • Observability of the electric system
  • Information systems for smart grids
  • Modeling and advanced simulation.

Utilizing new modeling and complex system simulation tools, the research will incorporate multi-dimensional aspects of network performance, including command-control, information systems and telecommunications networks.

“The creation of RISEGRID is a new step in the collaboration between EDF and major institutions of higher education such as Supélec on major issues such as smart grids,” said Bernard Salha, director of R&D at EDF.

RISEGRID gathers 20 academic and industrial researchers, and will be hosted by Supélec on the Plateau de Saclay campus.

“In creating this joint institute,EDF and Supélec want to create the scientific innovation required to meet the needs of the new energy systems, as well as to train engineers in the new technological challenges for France to maintain a leading position in the field of energy,” added Alain Bravo, director general of Supélec.

The aim is for RISEGRID to become a major player in its field, in partnership with the major academic and industrial players, and to respond to requests for proposals on French and European projects.
